Applicant must, as of April 15 of the application year: (1) be between ages 8 and 18 (not yet 19); (2) be a permanent, legal resident of the U.S. or Canada with a Social Security number or valid tax ID, currently residing in the 50 U.S. states, D.C., or Canada (U.S. territories excluded); (3) be currently working on, or have worked within the past 12 months on, an extraordinary service activity/project that clearly benefits other people or the planet and was initiated primarily by the applicant (not done solely to fulfill a school or work assignment); (4) apply as an individual or with at most one co-applicant (2 total); (5) demonstrate heroic character qualities (courage, compassion, dedication, generosity, perseverance, high moral purpose); heroism must extend beyond simply surviving a personal challenge. Two-step application: Step 1 is a short online pre-application that screens eligibility (opens ~Jan 7, due March 15, 5pm MT); applicants are notified by email within 10 days whether they may proceed. Only those approved receive instructions for Step 2, the full online application (due April 15, 5pm MT), which requires a 250-word project summary, a 1,000-word project essay, one color photo, up to 5 supplemental materials, and three Letters of Recommendation (one Lead Reference plus two additional; letters must be uploaded directly by the recommenders, not the applicant; family members cannot serve as references). Incomplete applications are not considered; late applications are not accepted. Parental consent required if applicant is under 16. No discrimination based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.
