Open to US students in grades 7-12 (Junior division: grades 7-9; Senior division: grades 10-12) enrolled in public, private, parochial, or home school in any of the 50 states, DC, or US territories; also open to students under age 20 in a high school correspondence/GED program, and to US citizens attending school overseas. Essay must be 500-750 words (excluding citations/bibliography), typed, submitted as a PDF, five paragraphs, double-spaced, 12-point font, citing at least five different sources with parenthetical citations plus a bibliography (APA, MLA, or Turabian format). Essay must be original student work -- AI-generated content results in disqualification. Each entry requires a self-generated unique ID code (first two letters of first name + first two letters of last name + grade + state abbreviation + last four digits of phone number) in the top right corner.
